Canon Ultrasound: Aplio, Xario and the Toshiba Legacy

Canon Medical’s ultrasound comes from the former Toshiba Medical, so both names turn up in Malaysian clinics and hospitals. What the lines are generally known for, and how to judge a Canon quote.

Canon ultrasound lines

Canon Medical Systems is a Japanese imaging company. It was Toshiba Medical Systems until Canon bought it in 2016 and renamed it in 2018, which is why older systems, service reports and many engineers still say “Toshiba”. This page is for orientation only — not a ranking and not a list of products we carry. Model names change, so ask which line and tier you are being quoted.

Where Canon is often shortlisted

Slow-flow imaging

Superb Micro-vascular Imaging (SMI) is Canon’s mode for showing slow flow in small vessels with less motion clutter than conventional colour or power Doppler. Test it on the exams where you would use it — thyroid, breast, inflamed joints, liver lesions.

Liver clinics

Higher-tier systems offer shear wave elastography and an attenuation measurement for liver fat. Check which are licensed on the quoted system and which probes support them.

Radiology departments

Hospitals that already run Canon CT or MRI sometimes look at Canon ultrasound for a single service relationship. Judge the ultrasound on its own images and support all the same.

Buying a used or ex-Toshiba system

Refurbished Toshiba-branded Aplio and Xario systems still appear on the Malaysian used market. They can be good value, but an older platform raises questions a new one does not.

  • Whether the model is still supported for parts and service, and until when.
  • Element test results for every probe, and whether replacement probes are still available.
  • Which software licences are active, and whether they transfer to you.
  • The service history and the date of the last electrical safety and performance check.
  • MDA registration — a used system must still be registered to be sold.

What to check before buying a Canon system

  • Which line and tier you are being quoted, and whether the unit is new, ex-demo or refurbished.
  • A demonstration on your own patients and exam types, including a patient who is hard to scan.
  • Every probe listed by name, and which probes the platform accepts later.
  • Which software options are active — such as SMI, elastography, liver fat measurement or 3D — and their price if added later.
  • Probe warranty, loan probes during repair, and local repair turnaround.
  • Applications training and service coverage in your state, including Sabah and Sarawak if relevant.
  • The MDA registration number for the system and each probe.

Comparing Canon fairly

Compare a Canon quote with GE, Philips, Samsung and the Chinese brands at the same tier, with the same probes and the same software switched on. For radiology work, scan the same difficult abdomen and the same small-parts patient on each system on the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canon ultrasound the same as Toshiba ultrasound?
Yes. Canon Medical Systems is the former Toshiba Medical Systems — Canon bought it in 2016 and renamed it in 2018 — so Aplio and Xario systems may carry either name.
What is SMI on a Canon ultrasound?
Superb Micro-vascular Imaging, Canon’s mode for displaying slow flow in small vessels with less motion clutter than conventional colour or power Doppler. Availability depends on the system and its licences.
What is the difference between Canon Aplio and Xario?
Aplio is the higher-tier line, used widely in radiology and hospitals; Xario is the mid-range general-imaging line. Compare them on the probes and options quoted, not the name.
Are you an authorised Canon distributor?
No. This page is a neutral guide. Tell us your exams and we will tell you which suitable systems we can quote.
