Refurbished Ultrasound Machine: How to Buy Second Hand Safely

A used or refurbished ultrasound can be good value — or an expensive problem. These are the checks that separate the two.

Last updated:

Refurbished, used or ex-demo

Refurbished

Inspected, repaired where needed and tested by the seller, usually with the seller’s own warranty.

Used (as is)

Sold in its current condition. Cheaper, but the risk of probe or software problems sits with you.

Ex-demo

A system used for demonstrations. Often recent, but check probe condition and how warranty is handled.

What to check before buying

  • Year of manufacture and whether the manufacturer still supports the platform with parts and software.
  • A probe element test report for every probe, plus a live image to look for dark lines or dropout.
  • The lens, housing and cable of each probe for cracks or damage.
  • Which software options are active, and whether licences transfer to you in writing.
  • Who services the unit locally, and the warranty on the system and the probes.
  • MDA registration — a used or refurbished unit sold in Malaysia is still a medical device under Act 737.

Red flags

  • No probe test results, or a seller who will only demonstrate on a phantom.
  • Software options described verbally but not listed on the invoice.
  • No local service contact or no warranty at all.
  • A platform the manufacturer no longer supports.
  • No MDA registration number you can check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a used ultrasound probe?
Ask for a probe element test report and look at a live image for dark vertical lines or dropout. Inspect the lens, housing and cable for cracks.
Do software licences transfer with a used ultrasound machine?
Not automatically. Confirm in writing which options are active and whether they transfer to the new owner.
Does a refurbished ultrasound machine need MDA registration?
Yes. A refurbished or used ultrasound sold in Malaysia is still a medical device and must be registered with the Medical Device Authority.
