Obstetric and Gynaecology Ultrasound Machines

What an O&G clinic needs from an ultrasound machine — from early-pregnancy transvaginal scans to growth charts, Doppler and 4D.

Last updated:

Essentials for O&G

  • Convex probe for abdominal obstetric scans; a volume convex probe for 3D/4D.
  • Endocavity probe for early pregnancy and gynaecology.
  • Obstetric measurement packages with growth tables and reports.
  • Colour and spectral Doppler for umbilical and uterine artery studies.
  • Good image storage and printing for patient records.

Do you need 3D/4D?

3D/4D adds volume imaging that some clinics use for detailed anatomy views and patient communication. It needs a volume probe and licence, which raise the cost. Many routine obstetric scans are done in 2D.

Safety in pregnancy

Follow the ALARA principle — scan only when clinically indicated, for as short a time as needed, and watch the thermal index, especially with Doppler in early pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

What is “mesin scan baby”?
It is the Malay term people use for an obstetric ultrasound machine used for pregnancy scans.
Does a GP clinic need a 4D ultrasound?
Usually not. A 2D system with convex and endocavity probes covers routine early-pregnancy and dating scans.
Which probe is used for early pregnancy?
An endocavity (transvaginal) probe gives the clearest early-pregnancy images; a convex probe is used from later in the first trimester.
