MSK Ultrasound Machine for Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine

Musculoskeletal ultrasound images tendons, muscles, joints and nerves in real time and guides injections. Here is what an MSK system needs.

Last updated:

What MSK ultrasound is used for

Tendons and ligaments

Tears, tendinopathy and thickening, including dynamic scanning while the joint moves.

Muscle injury

Strains, haematoma and follow-up during rehabilitation.

Joints

Effusion and synovitis, with power Doppler showing increased flow.

Nerves

Nerve entrapment and nerve blocks.

Guided procedures

Injections and aspirations with the needle visible in real time.

Probe and feature checklist

  • A high-frequency linear probe as the main MSK probe.
  • A small-footprint linear probe for fingers, wrists, ankles and feet.
  • A convex probe for deep structures such as the hip or large muscles.
  • Power Doppler that is sensitive to slow flow.
  • Needle visualisation tools for guided injections.
  • Cine-loop storage to review dynamic scans.

Diagnostic, not therapeutic

An MSK ultrasound machine images tissue. Therapeutic ultrasound units used in physiotherapy deliver energy for treatment and do not produce images, so they are a different device. Diagnostic systems and probes need MDA registration under the Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737).

Frequently asked questions

Which probe is best for MSK ultrasound?
A high-frequency linear probe for tendons, ligaments and small joints, with a convex probe for deep structures such as the hip.
Why is power Doppler useful in MSK ultrasound?
It is sensitive to slow flow, which helps show increased blood flow in inflamed synovium or tendons.
Is a portable ultrasound enough for sports medicine?
For pitch-side checks and guided injections, a good laptop or handheld with a high-frequency linear probe often is. Test fine tendon detail before buying.
